Podcast recommendations: parenting during a pandemic
I’ve been finding solace in listening to podcasts that focus on how we as parents can look after ourselves when we have even less time than before. Here are a few recommendations.
The Ambitious Mum Podcast with Kate Moryoussef
I recently discovered this podcast and I’m now working my way back through the whole series!
Episode: Nicola Harker – Allowing more self-compassion can help change everything
Joining Kate this week is Nicola Harker, a doctor, women’s empowerment specialist and a trained teacher of Mindful Self-Compassion. Nicola coaches entrepreneurial-spirited women who are feeling frustrated with themselves or their circumstance. Hear about the events that lead to Nicola’s epiphany, realising that she just couldn’t do it all and in fact, she was harming herself by not taking the time to slow down and truly look after herself.
In times where we have little control over what happens in the wider world, Nicola and Kate discuss overcoming the need to fix the situations in house, accepting things as they are and just “being” right now, using this time to show ourselves some true self-compassion.
Kate Moryoussef is a wellbeing/EFT coach and mum to four children, who is passionate about helping women rediscover their inner voice, tap into their expansive potential and realise themselves outside of their family dynamic.
Motherkind with Zoe Blaskey
I often return to this podcast series when I feel like I need to reconnect to myself as a parent. All the episodes are enlightening but I particularly enjoyed this one and it’s pretty much become a way of life for me at the moment.
Episode: How to find peace of mind in a pandemic with Sandy Newbigging
Sandy is a modern day monk who teaches meditation and helps people find calm within daily life. In this week’s episode, Sandy shares that the only thing we can control right now is our mindset. The place to find peace is the present, and when we leave the present, this is when we tend to fall into stress and fearful thinking. Sandy shares lots of tips to help you do that including his ‘quick reality check’ technique, which can help you be present and stay present in the now instead of worrying about the regrets of the past and unknowns of the future.
Ctrl Alt Delete with Emma Gannon
Another of my favourite podcasts – I’d recommend dipping into the archives and seeing what you can find.
Episode: Selina Barker: how to stay sane when working from home
This episode is dedicated to all things Working From Home with the brilliant life coach Selina Barker. Selina is a life design and career change coach, writer, podcast host, co-founder of Project Love and creator of the Goodbye Hello journal. She is someone who gives very practical advice around designing your day and avoiding burn out.
In this episode, we dig into how to stay sane when working from home; how to set psychological boundaries when our physical boundaries have temporarily gone, and how to get a new routine on the go. I loved Selina's tips: the permission to unplug, step away from Zoom, setting up morning routines, working a shorter day, having breaks, setting boundaries, how to notice when anxiety is triggering old habits, and being kind to yourself.
How to Fail with Elizabeth Day
A podcast dedicated to celebrating failures. This episode gave me a reality check, some new perspectives and made me feel less alone.
How to fail: Listeners share their Coronavirus stories
In this special episode, you will hear from NHS doctors and nurses, from teachers, from vets, from struggling parents and from blended families and from those who desperately want to be parents but aren't, from those who have just broken up with lovers and from those in brand new relationships now in lockdown, from those who have tragically said goodbye to loved ones, from people who live with chronic illness and disordered eating, from those whose school and university terms were cut short without notice, from spoon-carvers and home-bakers and trashy-television-watchers. In every story, there will be a shimmering grain of humanity that I hope makes each and every one of us feel more connected.
