What is coaching?

Jargon

Like most industries, coaching has its own set of slightly annoying jargon which can be difficult to cut through. You might have seen phrases like these to describe what coaching can do for you:

While these statements are true, and I wholeheartedly agree with each one, they are not necessarily the most useful way of helping people understand the essence of coaching. My response to the first one a few years ago would have been something like, ‘But I don’t want to be the best version of me, I want to be someone else!’. I now realise how awful it would be if I were someone else, but it took time to figure that out. And that last statement? ‘But… if had the answers already, I wouldn’t be stuck! Surely!?’

So, I thought I’d write a post to describe, in a nutshell, what coaching is and how it can help you.

What’s it all about then?

Coaching is all about personal growth and development. It can be about big or small changes but, essentially, a coach can support you in making a lasting change by helping you overcome any obstacles, raising your self-awareness another notch, empowering you to make decisions that are right for you and encouraging you to create manageable step-by-step action plans in order to achieve your goals.

Coaches do all this by:

  • Providing a non-judgemental space to talk through everything. You could talk through any area of your life. Coaches have a knack for picking up on things that you might think aren’t relevant but are actually having a huge impact on you.

  • Asking questions that dig deep and challenge your current thinking. We all have beliefs that aren’t helpful and potentially hold us back – these are often around self-doubt or practical concerns. A coach can help you get to the bottom of this so you can find a way forward.

  • Using tools and strategies that suit your needs and goals. This might be about looking at your skills, strengths and motivations (remember the above point about already having the answers? Well, looking at these three things are part of that!). It could be around improving your confidence or finding ways to manage your current situation. Everyone is different and the focus is very much on YOUR future and where you want to be: it’s about bridging that seemingly impossible gap between now and then.

But what is it that I do?

I work with creative people who want to make an impact, get their ideas into the world, feel fulfilled and build a life that is more about joy and purpose than grind and stress. I believe that curiosity, compassion, connection are the foundation for building that life and when we know how to tap into these natural strengths, the magic happens.

But in our busy, stressful lives, it’s not always easy to notice our strengths, and taking action sometimes feels impossible. This is where a coach is invaluable. Through a series of 1-2-1 coaching sessions, I help people to:

Get started

  • Gain clarity and confidence in their direction

  • Understand and and use their unique strengths

  • Sift through their many ideas to find the most important ones

Make it happen

  • Come up with an action plan

  • Challenge their own thoughts and beliefs,

  • Create new habits that lead to getting stuff done

Keep going

  • Learn how to quieten their inner critic

  • Improve their capacity to deal with inevitable setbacks

  • Use tools and techniques for managing their energy and emotions
